DEVON v GWENT

Congratulations to Henry Gater, who celebrated his maiden century for the county as we got the season off to a flying start with victory over Gwent.

Gater set about the Gwent bowlers from the start, smashing them to all parts of the Braunton CC ground with some big shots in a superb, free-flowing knock of 110. It came from just   75 balls and included 17 fours and two sixes.

He put on 181 for the second wicket in a partnership with skipper Marcus Hoddinott, who anchored the innings with a patient 69.

Just when the Gwent bowlers must have thought they had got over the worst, in came Seb Ansley for a quick-fire 45 not out as we finished on a formidable 277-4 from our 40 overs.

Good fielding and tight bowling curtailed the Gwent run chase despite a good start from their openers. Dominic Bess led the way with a miserly 3-31 from his 10 overs..  Ollie Dawe marked his county debut with 2-21 from five overs as the visitors finished on 179-5 to give Devon a resounding 98-run victory and set us up nicely for the first championship game against Hampshire..

SCOREBOARD

DEVON 277-4 (Hoddinott 69, Gater 110, Ansley 45no), Gwent 179-5 (Bess 3-31, Dawe 2-21).
Devon won by 98 runs.

HAMPSHIRE v DEVON

What a brilliant way to start our championship campaign – with victory over much-fancied Hampshire.

The match-winners were Jack Maunder and Seb Ansley with some free-flowing shots in their eye-catching batting.

Dominic Bess restricted the Hampshire batters with 2-14 from his eight overs and Matthew Skeemer picked up 2-16 at the end of the innings. Again it was impressive fielding and good, line and length bowling, which had a major part to play in containing the hosts who finished on 175-4 from their 40 overs. A challenging but more than gettable total, especially with a small boundary and quick outfield at New Milton CC.

Devon suffered an early setback with the dismissal of opener Gareth Penrice but the visitors soon steadied the ship before the fireworks began. Opener Marcus Hoddinott(26) and  Maunder, who hit 74 from 58 balls, including 10 fours, put on 83 for the second wicket. Then Seb Ansley joined Maunder in a 55-run partnership as we steamrollered to victory. Ansley needed just 44 balls to smash 70no, including 12 fours. He was there at the end with Skeemer(8no) as we won with more than four overs to spare.

The game was all about taking on to the field what Julian and I had been talking about and demonstrating during the winter workshops – playing freely, playing straight, having confidence in ability levels and working as a team. Superb result and well done to all! Not time to get carried away, however. The focus is now on the next game.

SCOREBOARD

Hampshire 175-4 (Bess 2-14, Skeemer 2-16);  Devon 180-4 (Hoddinott 26, Maunder 74, Ansley 70 no).
Devon won  by six wickets.

Devon V Somerset

Another challenge to face – and another challenge overcome. Victory over Somerset makes it two championship wins out of two and a cracking start to the season. Somerset opted to bat first at sun-soaked Torquay CC and were faced with some tight bowling – only nine wides(none would be even better) – especially from Exeter’s Ollie Dawe and North Devon’s Jack Brazier who are both playing for the county for the first time this season. Dawe finished with 2-24 from his seven overs and Brazier 2-16 from eight as the visitors were restricted to 129-9 from their 40 overs.

Key to the first half of the match was some outstanding all-round ground fielding and superb catching especially from Dan Powell and Jack Thomas. Standards have been set high for the rest of the campaign.

We didn’t have the best of starts but Jack Maunder got us back on track with 37 and a key second wicket partnership of 37 with Henry Gater. When Maunder went it put the spotlight on the depth of our team and batters. Could we cope with the pressure? Enter Powell  and an impressive 40no including one six which flew into the adjacent duck pond over extra cover. We won with more than four overs to spare.

This game tested the mettle of the entire squad and everybody came through with flying colours with contributions from one to 12. It’s something we discussed in the talk-shops during the winter sessions and something, gladly, all the boys have taken on board. We’re off the Isle of Wight brimming with confidence – but with our feet firmly on the ground…

SCOREBOARD

Somerset 129-9(Brazier 2-16, Dawe 2-24), Devon 130-6(Maunder 37, Gater 22, Powell 40no)
Devon won by four wickets.

ISLE OF WIGHT V DEVON

We made it three championship wins on the bounce with this comfortable six-wicket victory against the Isle of Wight.

The Isle of Wight won the toss and decided to bat on a difficult wicket at Newclose CC in Newport. Jack Brazier (2-15), Dom Bess (2-18) and Todd Rossouw (2-23) shared the wickets as the hosts had to settle for 123-9 from their 40 overs. Highlight of the fielding display was a superb, one-handed catch by Dom Bess.

Captain Marcus Hoddinott (18) and Matt Skeemer (18) got us off to a fine start with a 49 first wicket partnership. Dan Powell (32no) and Seb Ansley (18no) were then able to steer us across the finishing line with overs to spare. Dan batted particularly well.

It was another pleasing result for the entire squad. The lads were warned that they had set extremely high standards in the two previous championship games in batting, bowling a good line and length and outstanding, alert fielding. To be absolutely honest we didn’t quite reach those levels in this game. But, hey, a win’s a win and all credit to the squad for a fantastic start to the season.

SCOREBOARD

Isle of Wight  123-9 (Brazier 2-15, Bess 2-18, Rossouw 2-23); Devon 125-4 (Powell 32no, Ansley 18no).
Devon won by six wickets.

DEVON V BERKSHIRE

This promised to be one of our toughest tests – and we rose to the challenge to make it four wins on the trot. Skipper Marcus Hoddinott led the way. His patient 71 proved to be the platform to setting the visitors a challenging total. Marcus – who finished on 71 – put on 37 for the second wicket with Jack Maunder (21). But it was a 74-run fifth wicket partnership with Dominic Bess (35), which proved to be the turning point for our innings, which closed on 184-8.

Berkshire got off to a flying start on the quick outfield at Axminster CC but it was miserly spinner Bess who once again  turned the screw. He finished with 2-17 from eight, ably supported by Matt Skeemer (2-14) as Berkshire were dismissed for just 125. All the bowlers contributed in some way or the other and there were a couple of good run-outs.

We needed something to test the depth of our squad and this game and victory proved there is plenty of strength from players 1 to 13.

SCOREBOARD

Devon 184 - 8 (Hoddinott 71, Maunder 25, Bess 35), Berkshire 125 (Bess 2-17,Skeemer 2-14).
Devon won by 59 runs

DEVON V DORSET

Game cancelled due to rain.

TAUNTON FESTIVAL 2010

DEVON v WORCESTERSHIRE

Matt Skeemer got the festival off to a flying start with his maiden century for the county. Opener Matt carried his bat for a magnificent 106no, which included 18 fours. His ton came from just 110 balls.

There were useful contributions from Henry Gater (24) and Dan Powell (23) as we successfully chased down Worcester’s total of 222-5 with 11 overs to spare and three wickets in hand on the small number 6 pitch at Kings. Dom Bess was the pick of the bowlers with 3-30 from 10 overs. There were a few wobbles towards the end of our innings but we eventually ran out comfortable winners.

DEVON v LANCASHIRE

This was always going to be one of our toughest challenges of the festival. We were stuck in on a slow and low pitch 4 and found runs hard to come by. Skipper Marcus Hoddinott grafted his way to an invaluable 59 before being run out. Unfortunately, nobody else managed to reach double figures, as we had to settle for 130-8 from our 50 overs.

The choice was simple – cave in and get thumped or battle from start to finish. We chose the latter and pushed Lancashire all the way.

Hoddinott (2-16) and Jack Thomas (2-30) led the way with the bowling. There were also tight spells from Bess, Todd Rossouw, Ollie Dawe and Ben Roberts. Faced with good fielding and an excellent team sprit, Lancashire were made to fight hard and only won with less than four overs to spare.

DEVON v HAMPSHIRE

Hampshire batted first on a belter of a wicket on pitch number 3 which lived up to its promise of being a haven for run-making. We lost our discipline in bowling and fielding, especially towards the end as Hampshire racked up a massive 311-6.  The most successful bowlers in the onslaught were Thomas (2-42) and Rossouw (2-52). A daunting total but still achievable.

Hoddinott did his best again to set us on our way with 49. And there was hope as long as Jack Maunder, who scored 50, was still there. But once he went the run chase was all but over. Thomas weighed in with 23no, a score matched by Jack Brazier. But we finished 217 all out. Not a good day at the office!

DEVON v ESSEX

Back to pitch 3 and a chance to get back on track. Maunder realised his potential with an undefeated and sensible 62. Openers Hoddinott (42) and Henry Gater (33) put on 83 for the first wicket. But again our batting failed to fire lower down the order and we finished on 190-6.

Essex had little problem knocking off the runs for the lost of just two wickets.

DEVON v LEINSTER

It was time to change things around a little for the last match back on pitch 6. Spinners Bess and Hoddinott and medium pacer Roberts grabbed two wickets apiece as Leinster were held to 194-9.

Skeemer finished the festival on a high with 44, putting on 77 for the first wicket with his new opening partner Dan Powell who finished with 58. Barnaby Meadowcroft, making his debut for the county, chipped in with a quickfire 26 and Maunder finished 25no as we sailed home with 11 overs to spare and for the loss of just five wickets.

SCOREBOARD

Worcestershire 222-5 (Bess 3-30), Devon 225-7 (Skeemer 106no, Gater 24, Powell 23). Devon won by three wickets.

Devon 130-8 (Hoddinott 59), Lancashire 134-5 (Thomas 2-30, Hoddinott 2-16). Devon lost by five wickets.

Hampshire 311-6 (Thomas 2-42), Devon 217 (Hoddinott 49, Maunder 50, Thomas 23no, Brazier 23). Devon lost by 94 runs.

Devon 190-6 (Gater 33, Hoddinott 42, Maunder 62no), Essex 191-2. Devon lost by eight wickets.

Leinster 194-9 (Roberts 2-39, Bess 2-39), Devon 197-5 (Skeemer 44, Powell 58, Meadowcroft 26, Maunder 25no). Devon won by five wickets.

DEVON v GLOUCESTER

It was crucial that we got back on track in the u13 championship and we did just that by defeating Gloucester at Cornwood CC.

Henry Gater stole the bowling honours with 3-32 and he was supported well by Jack Brazier (2-32) as we managed to hold the visitors to 153-7.

Hoddinott – not for the first time this season – gave us a good solid start with a patient and hard-worked 36. Maunder smashed 30 in no time before Henry Gater came into finish the job with an undefeated 52. We won with 12 overs left and five wickets down.

SCOREBOARD

Gloucester 153-7 (Gater 3-32, Brazier 2-32), Devon154-5 (Hoddinott 36, Maunder 30, Gater 52no). Devon won by five wickets.

WALES v DEVON

It had to end some time. It was just a shame our unbeaten run had to finish against our fiercest rivals for the championship title. We elected to bat on a decent-looking track at Newport Cricket Club.

Openers Marcus Hoddinott and Dan Powell got us off to a half-decent start, putting 38 on the board before Hoddinott was bowled for nine. Powell went on to score 37. Henry Gater also chipped in with 21 and there was an invaluable 31no from Dom Bess coming in at number 6. But 132 was always going to be tough to defend.

We got off to a flying start and had the home side wobbling at 8 for 3 and 29 for 5. Seb Ansley (2-18) and Jack Brazier (3-17) did most of the damage and we fought hard. But we lost control just at the wrong time and 15 wides didn’t help as Wales got home with three overs to spare and seven wickets down. We just didn’t get enough runs. There’s still two games to go……..

SCOREBOARD

Devon 132-8 (Powell 37, Gater 21, Bess 31no), Wales 135-7 (Ansley 2-18, Brazier 3-17). Devon lost by three wickets.

WILTSHIRE v DEVON

We got back to business after the disappointment of the Wales game with a convincing win in Wiltshire. Wiltshire batted first and were held to 143-7 with Jack Brazier showing some good pace and finishing with 2-18 from eight. Bess was there, as always, with an economical return of 2-10 from his eight.  Skipper Marcus Hoddinott (65no) and Dan Powell (39) put on 103 for the first wicket. It was game over. Jack Maunder (33no) was there with Hoddinott at the end as we romped home with the loss of just one wicket.

SCOREBOARD

Wiltshire 143-7 (Brazier 2-28, Bess 2-10), Devon 145-1 (Hoddinott 65no, Powell 39, Maunder 33no). Devon won by nine wickets.

CORNWALL v DEVON

Last game of the season and no better way to finish a long campaign than with a win over the old enemy Cornwall.  We opted to bat first at Hayle CC and all looked fine as Marcus Hoddinott (36) and Dan Powell put on 53 for the first wicket. But two LBW verdicts and a couple of rash shots later saw us suddenly four wickets down with not many more runs on the board. Dom Bess (27) and Seb Ansley (48no) turned things around – there was also a useful little knock of a dozen from Ollie Dawe - and we managed to reach 180-7 from the 40 overs.

Tight opening spells from Jack Thomas and spinner Bess ensured the home side got off to a slow start. But slowly but surely they started eating away at our total. It took two superb catches out in the deep from Ben Roberts and Gareth Penrice to turn the game round. Catches win matches! Ansley ended up with match-winning figures of 3-24 and Dawe bagged 2-27 as Cornwall finished 19 runs light.

SCOREBOARD

Devon 180-7 (Hoddinott 36, Bess 27, Ansley 48no), Cornwall 161-6 (Ansley 3-24, Dawe 2-27). Devon won by 19 runs.

The two victories made it six wins out of eight championship games – that includes the Dorset wash out. A win against Wales would have made it a clean sweep and top-of-the-table spot. Having said that, we would have settled for a target of one defeat at the start of the season – although my target was to win the lot! The progress we have made as a team and as individuals has been remarkable, as we have tried to instil a harder cricket approach to the game. Coach Mr Wyatt has been talking about slow learners, quick learners. Everybody in the squads has developed quickly. Yep there are loads of areas to work on – play and bowl straight – but the future for this squad is very bright. Thanks to everybody.
